Malcolm Bird & Spear Fishing NZ raising funds for the Kapiti community.
Spear Fishing NZ's community fund raising activities, arranged by Mal Bird, raised nearly $90k this year for the Kapiti community, in particular the Mary Potter Hospice & the Kapiti Volunteer Fire Brigade.
An outstanding achievement from those dedicated few individuals involved and deserving recipients.
The Kapiti community is also benefitting from donations of fresh fish caught in local spearfishing competitions, there is now waste with many families in need being supplied with locally caught fish.
Mal engaged with Chris Jupp, who is LegaSea's Wellington Region Kai Ika fish distribution manager. Kai Ika have distributed thousands of kgs of freshly caught, fish heads and frames to Auckland communities in need these last few years, this process commenced in Wellington and Porirua in 2021, and now being provided in the Kapiti district.
Fish frames, heads, even excess or bycatch can become someone's meal, providing nutrition to those in our community less fortunate while ensuring total utilisation of this valuable Kai moana, reducing waste & need to catch more.
