Taking a private boat tour from Wakatobi Resort is a relaxing and fascinating way to find out what's going on under the waters surrounding the resort.

Our group included people who had hardly ever snorkelled, non-divers and divers. We decided to hire a private boat for some days, allowing us flexibility to visit the outer islands together.

Everyone has a swim crate for snorkel/dive gear and numbered hangers for wetsuits so gear is put on board while you're still having breakfast.

Our boat, Waka 1, had plenty of dry space (we did have one rainstorm on our second day), hot towels for when we came out of the water, homemade ginger tea, and warm fluffy towels for drying.

The first morning we visited ‘The Zoo’, an aptly-named site flush with soft corals and brimming with sea life. We saw cuttlefish, clownfish, lionfish and giant pufferfish. For every four of us in the water, Wakatobi provided a guide. During the week, some of the snorkelers were even lucky enough to see spinner dolphins!

Over the coming days, we were able to explore our guides’ favourite reefs, seeking calm locations on the lee side of sea breezes and returning just in time for lunch.
