Show your heart for the Hauraki
Greenpeace Event - Come together on the water on Saturday, April 15, and make some noise in support of banning bottom trawling from the Gulf
On Saturday April 15 Greenpeace is holding an event to show some love for the Hauraki Gulf.
It’s called ‘Show your heart for the Hauraki’ and along with partners Forest & Bird they are calling all boaties, paddleboarders, kayakers and ocean lovers to join them on the water for a 'people powered' stand against bottom trawling.
Greenpeace says the following in its call-to-action statement:
"We know that bottom trawling causes immense harm to our blue backyard, destroying habitats and marine life and decimating scallop beds.
"To restore the Gulf, bottom trawling has got to go. That’s why we’ve set up this event and why we’d love your help.
"Imagine a mass gathering of boats - big and small - and crowds on the beach all calling for an end to destructive bottom trawling. This is people power in action and will send a strong message to decision makers that bottom trawling has no future in the Gulf.
"The tide of public opinion is already turning against bottom trawling with a recent survey showing 84% of people living around the Hauraki Gulf want bottom trawling gone so the Marine Park has a chance to recover and thrive.
"The time for action is now."
How to support
Greenpeace is encouraging participants to "bring a boat big or small".
For participants without access to a boat an event is being held at Mission Bay. See Greenpeace Facebook Events page for details.
