Petition to ban bottom trawling in the Hauraki Gulf
The Hauraki Gulf Alliance "Hands off my bottom" campaign to drive public opposition to destructive fishing methods in the Hauraki Gulf is underway.
The Hauraki Gulf Fisheries Plan is now out for public consultation, with submissions due by 3rd March.
As expected, the plan allows bottom trawling to continue in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park in unspecified ’trawl corridors’.
It will also allow commercial scallop dredging to continue when the fishery reopens.
Continual destruction of the seafloor does not align with the plan's objective to achieve 'healthy, functioning ecosystems', and the entirety of the plan does not provide actions to meaningfully enact ecosystem-based management approaches contributing to more fish in the water.
